Metting Hub

The meeting hub was my first ever partner project, which was difficult, yet proved to be successful. Inspired by USM furniture, specifically the Haller system, our hub reflected connection through design. The floor plan was connected by five circles, which in reality were coffee and pastry bars that are able to be spun to serve four different rooms at the same time. All walls but one were also eventually connected to perimeter walls.

The wall material that we chose was glass so that when meetings were being held in one room, people would still be able to see what is going on in the surrounding rooms, hence connecting each group’s meeting to another. The cafĂ© was located in the center of the space, which created a central area for people to meet and socialize, connecting easily with each other.
The photos included were my major contributions to the project.

Live/Work/Play

In the Live/Work/Play project, we were instructed to create an apartment space for an actual artist or designer. The space would be used for common living and for their design work. I chose fashion designer Jeffrey Sebelia.

I wanted the space to reflect Jeffrey’s edgy, yet sophisticated, aesthetic. I was able to pattern this in his space through the use of well placed, irregular wall angles, the graffiti tag that I placed on the front industrial doors, and a perimeter runway.

Jeffrey’s clothing design emphasizes strong parts of the body such as the hips, shoulders and neck. I wanted to also be able to translate that into his space. I was able to accomplish this through the placement of the runway along the perimeter of the space. Emphasis was given to the perimeter walls, the skeleton of the apartment space, through the use of industrial doors, through the use of chosen materials and again, the placement of the runway. Concluding this to be a space that Jeffrey would use as a presentation space, I also included built-in seating and a bar for guests.

Kiosk

The kiosk project instructed me to design and place a kiosk in either Central Park or Grand Central Terminal. I designed a bike kiosk which was to be placed in Central Park near a central meeting area for many of the bike riders.

The design includes a snack bar by the outside and inside of the kiosk, computers that provide information about NYC biking trails, meetings, and events, and an area for quick fixes if a bike broke down. My design was circular to reflect the bike tire, the most important part of the bike. I also wanted to reflect the Loeb boathouse, which is right next to where the kiosk would be placed. I did this by the use of the hip roof and simple architectural design.

Card Construction

For the first project of the semester we were given an assignment to create any type of construction from one deck of playing cards. We were then supposed to create a design program that was based on our card construction.

After I created my model, I was able to see a resemblance between it and a structure that may be found in a botanical garden or similar location. From there I created a gazebo type design which people are able to walk through and around. A person may go here for “reflection,” which is enhanced by the water that surrounds the construction and through the material of the construction, which would be a semi-reflective aluminum. Sun would also be able to shine through the patterning on the sides of the building, allowing an appealing pattern to reflect on the water.
